At Work: Beginner is an English language resource to assist students to understand Australian workplace practices and develop the language and numeracy they need at work.

Unit 1 provides information about work in Australia including employment sectors and categories, employment conditions, leave and pay and starting work.

Units 2 to 5 follow a range of characters who work in different employment contexts. The characters seen in the DVD interact in workplace situations including:

• following instructions
• using equipment
• telephoning
• working safely
• on-the-job training
• asking about pay and problems
• talking to workmates
• completing workplace forms
• reading and writing messages and emails
• reading maps, diagrams and rosters
• checking information and instructions
• describing the workplace
• participating in workplace social events

Spoken and written activities help students develop the language, literacy and numeracy skills they need to participate in their own workplaces.
