Description

A true story about overcoming obstacles

Light Shines in the Darkness was a TELLS resource development project.  The reader has eleven real-life stories written chronologically about a TAFE ESL student, Ombeni Moke, a visually-impaired young adult, who immigrated to Australia as a refugee with no English and little educational background.

In the reader, the first two stories are based on interviews with with Ombeni and his family.  Stories three to eleven are from the author’s observations and working diaries which she kept during the three years she was Ombeni’s full time one-on-one disability support worker.  The author helped him overcome many barriers and build positive attitudes which enable him to progress from Preliminary level to level III in Certificate III in Spoken and Written English (CSWE).

Light Shines in the Darkness is intended to encourage students to overcome obstacles so as to gain a better life with confidence and positive attitudes.  Ombeni’s stories are written in first person so as to illustrate his thoughts and feelings on how he struggles to continually improve, knowing that he still has a lot of obstacles to cope with on the way to pursue his dreams.
